HST 2300 History of China (3 credits)

In this course we shall survey Chinese History, mostly concentrating on the Modern History of China (ca.1400-1980). There will be a beginning portion (Weeks I-II) in which I will summarize aspects of Ancient and Medieval China and the philosophical roots of Chinese Civilization up to the late-fourteenth century CE. In Week III, we shall take up the Ming Dynasty and the beginning of Modern China. The emphasis of this course will be on the political and intellectual history of China in the Modern Era, concluding in the late twentieth century. Prerequisite(s): None.
