The Middle Level Science Endorsement is an optional add-on for Education students. It can be added to any full license and results in licensure to teach Middle School Science (Grades 5-8).
The credits can be taken in addition to a student’s plan of study, spread throughout semesters as their schedule permits pending prerequisites.
Science Endorsement
Take One of Each of the Following:
- BIOL 1400 Cellular Principles (4 credits) – OR –
BIOL 1110 Human Biology (4 credits)
Most sections offered in the fall - BIOL 1500 Diversity of Life (4 credits) – OR –
BIOL 1120 Gen Biol/Evol & Ecology (3 credits)
Most sections offered in the spring - CHEM 2211 Principles of Chemistry I (4 credits) – OR –
CHEM 1111 General Chemistry I (4 credits)
Most sections offered in the fall - CHEM 2212 Principles of Chemistry II (4 credits) – OR –
CHEM 1112 General Chemistry II (4 credits)
Most sections offered in the spring
Take All of the Following:
- SCI 3100 Integrative Science For Teachers (4 credits)
Offered in the fall – even years only - GEOL 1110 Physical Geology (4 credits)
Usually offered in the fall - ED 4737 Content Area Reading (3 credits)
25 hours of field experience outside of class
Offered in the fall and spring (online) - ED 3417 Teaching and Learning in the Middle School (3 credits)
Offered only in the fall (online) - ED 3410 Middle School Science Methods (4 credits)
25 hours of field experience outside of class

Student Teaching
- ED 4840 Student Teaching – Special Fields (5 credits)*
*When combined with Elementary Education (or another full licensure program) you will complete a total of 12 Student Teaching credits.
*If you are already licensed and are adding a Middle School Endorsement, you will complete an 80-hour practicum in place of the student teaching requirement.
