A.C. Clark Library Accepting Submissions for Book Art Exhibit, “Books Unbound!”

Bemidji State University’s A.C. Clark Library will host a book art exhibit titled “Books Unbound” from April 7 through May 7 and is now accepting art submissions.

This exhibition is open to submissions from the area community, which includes those within a 60-mile radius of Bemidji. Artists and community members of all ages, including high school students, as well as Bemidji State faculty, staff and students can submit work to be showcased at the exhibit.

The A.C. Clark library has had the goal of hosting a book art exhibit since the library underwent renovations a few years ago, making the space more welcoming and open, and giving it display opportunities.

“Community engagement has always been part of the BSU mission and ‘Books Unbound’ is a great chance to solicit all members of the community to be involved,” Dianne Narum, cataloging and government documents librarian, said. “Now that community gathering is a possibility again, this is the perfect opportunity to move forward with an event like this.”

Submissions must be book-themed art. This includes pieces created using repurposed books or depicting a book theme, character(s), or storyline. Artwork can be no larger than 24 inches by 24 inches. 3D art is encouraged but can be no larger than 24 inches in height, width, and depth. Additionally, weight must be under 25 pounds.

Art will be displayed on the top of bookshelves waist-high. 2D art requires the ability to be displayed on a table-top easel. There is no hanging wall display option for submissions.

For more information about entry requirements, visit the A.C. Clark Library’s Facebook page.

The deadline for submissions is March 17 by 5 p.m. Jurying will take place March 18. Artists will be notified by March 23.

“Creativity and craftsmanship are the most important characteristics I would focus on, but I’d like to see submissions push the thematic boundary,” Laura Goliaszewski, BSU’s art gallery director, said. “Here is where you get into emotions and what is important to the artist.”

Artwork must be delivered to the A.C. Clark Library by April 1. An opening reception will be held on April 7, from 4-6 p.m. in the A.C. Clark Library.
