In recognition of Women’s History Month throughout March and International Women’s Day on March 8, Bemidji State University is honoring womanhood and celebrating the history, culture and experience of women worldwide.
“We begin this year’s women’s history month celebrations during a period of worldwide turmoil,” Bemidji State’s President Faith C. Hensrud said. “As we look forward to International Women’s Day, the events of our time are a reminder not only of the issues women continue to face, but also of everything we have overcome. This privilege to rejoice in the accomplishments of women, while honoring each other and our futures, is a hopeful reminder that turmoil can be overcome and that together we can build a more equitable world for all.”
Nicholas Taylor, Bemidji State’s interim affirmative action officer, said it is important that we elevate the work and voices of women on campus. He also emphasized the importance of recognizing where the institution can grow with representation, and identifying where voices are underrepresented.
“Women have played – and continue to play – a vital role in the educational systems of Minnesota,” he said. “Representation matters and, historically, positions of influence such as administration have had an underrepresentation of women, especially from intersecting and marginalized identities. We can and must do better with supporting women on our campuses, in our community and especially in addressing the health and safety of queer and Indigenous women in our state.”
Each year, the Center for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion organizes and coordinates various educational events for the campus community. Under the direction of Dr. Solar Hong, director of diversity, equity and inclusion, the theme of this year’s Women’s History Month Experience is “Providing Healing, Promoting Hope”.
“We honor the pioneering women who have paved the way for us, we celebrate the brave women who have been standing up for us, and we will continue our fighting for justice, equal rights for every woman and every human,” Hong said.
All events are free and open to the public.
