Starting Fall 2022 Bemidji State University’s Department of Music will offer a fully online arts management certificate for undergraduate and graduate students who want to advance their careers in the nonprofit arts scene.
Through a partnership with the Department of Political Science, the certificate program will feature five courses and a capstone internship. Eric Olson, assistant professor of music, said the program is designed to be flexible and can be completed in as little as one year or as much as three.
“Students in the program will develop leadership skills, fundraising and grant writing acumen, an innovation mindset and financial management skills within the arts nonprofit space,” Olson said. “These certificates will provide students with options to supplement their artistic skills with management credentials in the arts regardless of their location.”
Faculty teaching courses for the arts management certificate have decades of experience as artists, nonprofit administrators, fundraisers and innovators in the arts, Olson said. The certificate program includes courses in leadership and strategy, fundraising, marketing and nonprofit finances. Students must also fulfill a three-credit internship course that may be either full-time or part-time in a public or private agency appropriate to their degree.
“Artists who acquire an arts management certificate will have a competitive advantage when applying for and assuming leadership positions in existing arts organizations,” Olson said. “They will also have deeper knowledge of starting their own arts organization, should they wish to.”
