Three Bemidji State University students enrolled in the Department of Social Work have received child welfare stipends for their interest in providing care for children who have been placed in out-of-home care as a result to maltreatment or other circumstances.
Seniors Corey Maras, from Lamberton, Minn., Katie Northbird, from Red Lake, Minn., and junior Makinsey Scharping, from Arlington, Minn., were appointed as child welfare scholars after a competitive application process.
All scholars will receive a $2250 stipend each semester until they graduate, take program-specific courses and complete their practicum at a county-, state- or tribal-level child welfare unit.
Among other requirements, university child welfare scholars are expected to attend student meetings and training seminars pertaining to child welfare. They must also maintain good academic standing as defined by social work department policy. Upon exit from the social work department, students are to seek and accept employment in public child welfare.
