Chelsey Jourdain, an elementary education major from Bemidji, Minn., is president of BSU’s Council of Indian Students.
Jourdain was inspired to get involved by her grandfather, Roger Jourdain, who served as the chairman of the Red Lake tribal council for more than 30 years.
“His legacy motivated me to also have a similar leadership experience at a smaller level with the Council of Indian students here at Bemidji State,” she said.
Jourdain enjoys helping and guiding people to achieve their goals, fundraising and organizing events, especially the university’s annual powwow — which will celebrate its 45th anniversary on Nov. 18.
“We host the powwow each year and it is the largest community event at Bemidji State,” Jourdain said.
The council will also help host the American Indian Resource Center’s Sioux Chef fundraiser on Oct. 13 and its annual Feast for the Homeless in early November.
“At the feast, we give care packages as just a little extra help to people in need, and represent Bemidji State and our community in a positive way,” she said.
The council meets every Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the American Indian Resource Center conference room. All are welcome to attend.
