Bemidji State University’s Talley Gallery will feature an exhibition of work by a number of noted Minnesota ceramic artists, beginning Oct. 8. The exhibition also will feature a workshop and gallery talk.
The exhibition, “Minnesota Potters: Sharing the Fire,” will exhibit the work of four of the best-known potters in Minnesota: Richard Bresnahan, Robert Briscoe, Linda Christianson and Warren McKenzie; and potters with whom those four have shared their knowledge and expertise: Guillermo Cuellar, Steven Lemke, Jason Trebs and Jil Franke.
The exhibit will celebrate the ways that knowledge, experience and spirit, and pottery as a tradition, are passed from person to person. The participating artists have been key contributors to Bemidji’s annual “It’s Only Clay” competition at the Bemidji Community Art Center. Briscoe was the show’s first juror of selection, and will be selecting artists for this year’s 10th anniversary show, which opens in November.
A reception for “Minnesota Potters” will be held from noon to 1 p.m. on Oct. 17, and will feature a gallery talk and documentary presentation by Briscoe. Following the reception, Briscoe will hold a ceramics workshop from 1-4 p.m. The reception and workshop are free and open to the public
“Minnesota Potters” is made possible in part by a grant provided by the Minnesota State Arts Board through state legislative appropriation from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, and by a collaboration with Anoka-Ramsey Community College and the Northern Clay Center.
The Talley Gallery exhibition is the third of four stops the exhibition has made on a traveling tour of Minnesota; the show ran in May and June at the Grand Marais Arts Colony, and in September at the Macrostie Art Center in Grand Rapids. The tour will end in Jan.-Feb., 2013, at the Paul Watkins Gallery in Winona.
Located in room 212 of the Education Arts building on the campus of Bemidji State University, the Talley Gallery is barrier-free and open at no charge to the public. All activities in the Talley Gallery are supported by the University’s Student Activity Fee Allocation Committee and Bemidji State University’s Department of Visual Arts.
Hours for the Talley Gallery are Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
