BEMIDJI, Minn. (April 13, 2012) — Bemidji State University’s Department of Music closes out the last month of the spring semester with a busy slate of concerts, beginning Sunday, April 15, with a joint performance by the Symphonic Band and Brass Quintet.
• Sunday, April 15 – Symphonic Band and Brass Quintet
In a joint concert, Bemidji State’s Brass Quintent will perform a selection of pieces from Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story,” and the Symphonic Band will perform traditional selections including a medly from the musical “Sweeney Todd.”
The concert begins at 3 p.m. in the Main Theater of BSU’s Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens. Students with valid IDs are admitted for free.
• Thursday, April 19 – MIDIots
The MIDIots are an electronic ensemble featuring faculty from the Department of Music. The concert will feature Kevin Daley on MIDI guitar and also will include other surprise guests. The band will feature original compositions and arrangements by members of the band, and include medleys featuring Michael Jackson and ‘80s New Wave music.
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Thompson Recital Hall of BSU’s Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex. Admission is free.
• Friday, April 20 – Kent Lyman guest recital
Steinway artist Kenty Lyman has distinguished himself as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States. He also has toured, performed and taught master classes in South Korea and China and has played and served as a competition judge in Brazil.
Lyman is currently professor of music and coordinator of piano studies at Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C. He has previously served on music faculties at Coker College, Southwest Missouri State University and Western Kentucky University. A native of Utah, he received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, and master’s and doctoral degrees from Indiana University.
He will perform Bach’s “Partita no. 2 in C minor, BWV 826,” Robert Schumann’s “Sonata in G minor, OP. 22,” and Nikolai Kapustin’s “Sonata no. 1 (Sonata Fantasia), Op. 39.”
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Thompson Recital Hall of BSU’s Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex. Admission is free.
• Sunday, April 22 – Wind Ensemble and Bemidji Choir
The Bemidji Choir and Wind Ensemble gather for a joint concert, performing selections from “Carmina Burana” by Carl Orff, an epic symphonic work on the themes of love and spring. The Wind Ensemble will also perform Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man” and two student compositions by Aaron Shinabargar, a junior in music from Cohasset, Minn., and Hank Fiskevold, a senior in music from Detroit Lakes.
