BEMIDJI, Minn. (Oct. 17, 2011) — Dr. Stephen Carlson, associate professor of music at Bemidji State University, will present a fall faculty recital on campus, Friday, Oct. 21.

The recital will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Thompson Recital Hall in Bemidji State’s Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex. Admission is free for all guests.

Carlson will perform four pieces at the recital, opening with “St. Francis of Paola Walking on the Water” by Franz Liszt in recognition of the 200th anniversary of Liszt’s birth. Carlson also will play Beethoven’s “Sonata No. 32 in C minor, Op. 111,” Chopin’s “Ballade No. 4 in F minor, Op. 52,” and three movements from Stravinsky’s “Petrushka.”

This season, Carlson has recitals scheduled in Arizona, Minnesota, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Carlson is a versatile soloist and chamber musician who has been a member of Bemidji State’s music faculty since 2006. He has performed at a variety of colleges, universities and festivals throughout much of the United States and eastern Canada. He appeared at th eMinnesota Valley Sommarfest in St. Peter, Minn., from 1995-2003, and in 2005 he made his New York debut as a solo recitalist at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. Carlson has appeared three times with the Bemidji Symphony Orchestra, played for the Bismarck-Mandan (N.D.) Symphony and also has played chamber music with the South Carolina Philharmonic, Charleston Symphony and Greenville (S.C.) Symphony. Carlson holds degrees from Gustavus Adolphus College and the University of Illinois, and earned his doctorate in piano performance and pedagogy at the University of Iowa.

Prior to joining the Bemidji State faculty, Carlson was a tenured faculty member at Coker College in Hartsville, S.C., and also taught piano at the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Gustavus Adolphus College and St. Joseph’s School of Music in St. Paul, Minn.
