BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sept. 30, 2011) — Bemidji State University senior Megan Sattler, a music composition major from Rugby, N.D., will present her senior recital on Saturday, Oct. 16.
“I began taking composition classes with Dr. Patrick Riley when I started [going to BSU], then I started to compose about a year and a half ago,” said Sattler, who transferred to Bemidji State in 2009. Sattler changed her major from music education to music composition shortly after taking a composition course.
Sattler’s recital features original pieces she has composed during her time at Bemidji State. Her compositions include a trumpet quintet; a trumpet solo with a piano accompaniment; a trio between a clarinet, a French horn and cello; and finally a piece that will serve as a dedication to all those affected by the spring 2011 flood in Minot, N.D. A photo montage of flood photos will accompany that piece.
“It will be a kind of soundtrack to the pictures,” Sattler said.
Sattler will be accompanied by Dr. Erika Svanoe, assistant professor of music; Dr. Patrick Riley, an adjunct instructor in music; and Dr. Del Lyren, professor of music. Other students in the Department of Music will accompany, as well.
Sattler completed her coursework at Bemidji State during the spring semester; the recital will complete final requirement before graduating. Sattler’s future plans involve either a continuation of her music education in graduate school; pursing a career in law; or expanding on her current role as a Certified Nursing Assistant to pursue a career in medicine.
