BEMIDJI, Minn. (Nov. 10, 2010) — Dr. Jeanine E. Gangeness, associate professor of nursing at Bemidji State University, recently graduated from the Higher Education Resource Services (HERS) Denver Institute, held Aug. 1-7, Sept. 9-11 and Oct. 21-23 at the University of Denver.
Held annually since 2007, the HERS Institute for Women in Higher Education offers women faculty and administrators the opportunity to participate in an intensive program that prepares them to be leaders in higher education.
Fifty-five people representing 46 institutions participated in this year’s institute, which had a special focus on women’s leadership in times of crisis. Topics included understanding the new economic environment, planning strategies beyond recovery and empowering and sustaining leadership.
Gangeness has been at Bemidji State since the fall semester of 2003 and has been chair of the Department of Nursing since Jan. 2007. She oversaw the expansion of Bemidji State’s nursing program to include a four-year track program, the expansion of the RN-to-baccalaureate track to a delivery site in Cambridge, Minn., contracted with over 120 health care agencies to provide practicum opportunities for Bemidji State students and helped the program maintain accreditation during a period of rapid expansion.
Her research on the use of built environments for physical activity and her work on case-study research design and online education has been published in professional nursing journals. Before joining the Bemidji State faculty, she was a public health nurse at Cass County (Minn.) Public Health. She earned her Ph. D. in nursing from the University of North Dakota.
Gangeness’ participation in the HERS Denver Institute was sponsored in part by a grant funded to Bemidji State University. She was selected after a recommendation by Dr. Patricia L. Rogers, dean of Bemidji State’s College of Health Sciences and Human Ecology.
