"Theatre Unlimited" student group's fall production opens Nov. 19

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Nov. 8, 2010) — “Dog Sees God,” the fall production of Theatre Unlimited, the student-run theatre club at Bemidji State University, will open Nov. 19.

Theatre Unlimited is open to any student interested in being involved with theatre productions, regardless of academic major. The organization helps the University’s theatre program produce three plays each academic year and also produces and stages its own performances.

The club’s fall performance is “Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead,” written by Bert V. Royal. A parody of the comic strip “Peanuts,” the play follows a familiar group of characters into high school after their childhoods have been altered by drugs, alcohol and social pressures.

CB’s dog has died of rabies, leading him to question the existence of an afterlife. His best friend is strung out on drugs; his sister gone Goth; his ex-girlfriend is an incarcerated fire bug; and his other friends are too drunk to offer any sort of advice or comfort. But a chance meeting with the artistic kid who’s been bullied by the group offers a chance at solace.

“Dog Sees God” premiered at the 2004 New York International Fringe Festival and won the festival’s Excellence Award for Best Overall Production.

Theatre Unlimited’s production of “Dog Sees God” will be held Friday and Saturday, Nov. 19-20, at the Black Box Theatre in Bemidji State’s Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex. Both performances will have 7:30 p.m. opening curtains. Tickets will be available at the door for $6. Tickets for high school students with a valid ID will be $3 and Bemidji State students admitted free with ID. Seating is limited to 75.

“Dog Sees God” will be directed by Teresa Rankin, a senior theatre major from Thief River Falls, Minn. It is intended for a mature audience and contains adult subject material including pervasive language, drug and alcohol use, violence and scenes of sexuality.
