BEMIDJI, Minn. (May 27, 2010) — The Talley Gallery of Bemidji State University’s Education Arts Complex will feature works of the late Eugene Dalzotto, one of the first art professors at Bemidji State, in an exhibition entitled “THIS IS WHAT IT IS” beginning Monday, June 7.
Dalzotto, who was instrumental in the formation of Bemidji State’s Department of Visual Arts, was a master printmaker and Fulbright Scholar who studied in Europe and settled in Bemidji. He taught art and art history at the University until his retirement in 1985. He remained in Bemidji after retirement, producing works in his home studio until the late 1990s. Dalzotto passed away in 2009.
The exhibition will feature works spanning more than five decades of Dalzotto’s life, reflecting his time spent in the military during World War II through the 1990s. The works reflect his view of the world and the values he held dear. Dalzotto’s goal was to stimulate conversation between the artist and viewer, not to produce an end product or object.
An opening reception will be held from 1-4 p.m. Monday, June 7 , at the gallery. Friends of Dalzotto will give a gallery talk during the reception, beginning at 1:30 p.m.
Dalzotto’s exhibition will run from June 7-July 2 and again from Aug. 23-Sept. 3.
“THIS IS WHAT IT IS” is made possible through funds provided by Bemidji State University’s Student Activity Fee Allocation Committee and contributions from Patrick Lochwood and Tom Saga.
Located in room 212 of the Education Arts building on the campus of Bemidji State University, the Talley Gallery is barrier-free and open at no charge to the public. All activities in the Talley Gallery are supported by the University’s Student Activity Fee Allocation Committee. The gallery will be open from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, for the June 7-July 2 exhibition.
