BEMIDJI, Minn. — The Western Brass Quintet, Western Michigan University’s award-winning faculty ensemble, will perform Monday, April 6, as the season finale of the annual Bemidji Concert Series presented by Bemidji State University.

The 7:30 p.m. concert will be held in the Thompson Recital Hall of the Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex at BSU.  Individual event tickets are $20 for the general public, $5 for students and free for students with a BSU identification card.  Tickets may be purchased at the BSU Department of Music, Lueken’s Village Foods North and Tutto Bene.   If available, tickets also will be sold at the door.

The Quintet’s Bemidji program will include a mostly contemporary selection of pieces including Witold Lutoslawksi’s 1982 “Mini Overture,” Bruce Adolphe’s “Triskelion,” and David Snow’s “Dance Movements.”  The Quintet will also present “Four Monteverdi Madrigals” written by Claudio Monteverdi, who was born in 1567.  The concert will conclude with three movements from “The Broken Down Band” written by Joseph Blaha in 2003.
Western Brass Quintet

Founded in 1966, the Quintet is comprised of the brass professors at Western Michigan University.  The ensemble offers a variety of classical programs ranging from Bach to Bernstein and remains committed to promoting the composition of significant works for brass quintet.

Notable achievements include performances at the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Recital Hall, three International Trumpet Guild Conferences, the International Horn Symposium, the International Trombone Workshop, and the T.U.B.A. Convention.   In addition, the quintet has toured the People’s Republic of China, as well as Russia, Sweden and Germany, made five recordings and performed concerts at more than 100 American universities.

Members of the Western Brass Quintet are: Scott Thornburg and Stephen Jones, trumpet; Lin Foulk, horn; Daniel Mattson, trombone; and Deanna Swoboda, tuba.

History and sponsorship
The Bemidji Concert Series began seven years ago with the goal of making Bemidji the cultural center for northern Minnesota and providing the Bemidji region with music that could not commonly be heard without traveling to the Twin Cities.
