Women's Center presents “The Vagina Monologues," March 5-6

BEMIDJI, Minn. — The humorous and poignant show “The Vagina Monologues” will be presented on Friday and Saturday, March 5-6, as part of Bemidji State University’s month-long series of events to recognize March as Women’s History Month.

The performances, both scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m., will be held at the Beaux Arts Ballroom on the BSU campus. Tickets will be available at the door, $10 for general admission and $5 for students with a valid ID. Students need not attend Bemidji State to receive the student discount; any valid student ID will grant admission for the discounted price.

Written by Eve Ensler, “The Vagina Monologues” reveals a series of different women’s stories and experiences involving their genitalia. The characters, who range from an attorney-turned-sex therapist to an old lady from Queens, speak on the subject in alternating funny, poetic and provocative voices.

Ensler developed the idea for “The Vagina Monologues” after she realized that her work, mostly about women, was missing a physiological connection.

The play won an Obie Award in 1997 and has toured numerous countries since it was originally produced in the United States. It became a best-selling book a year later.

Bemidji State’s performance of “The Vagina Monologues” is sponsored by the Women’s Center and Bemidji State’s office of Student Development and Enrollment.
