Registration open for 2008 MusiCamp and Director's Workshop

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The 2008 Bemidji State University MusiCamp is accepting applications from young vocalists, instrumentalists and pianists interested in a one- or two-week on-campus program of intensive music enrichment in July. The 2008 MusiCamp will also feature a director’s workshop, available for graduate credit.

Instruction is open to students in grades 7-12, including those who graduated this spring. The camp opens with the band, jazz, orchestra and piano camp, July 13-19, followed by the choral and vocal camp, July 20-26. Students may choose to attend one or two weeks as day campers or on a residential basis.

In addition, renowned composer and band director Sam Hazo will offer a director’s workshop from July 15-19.

MusiCamp, now in its 61st year, offers a variety of music instruction including lessons, theory classes, group ensemble, lecture-demonstrations and concerts, all under the direction of professional performers and instructors. In addition, students may participate in a selection of outdoor activities on the shores of Lake Bemidji.

Each session will conclude with a final concert open to the public.

Band Camp
Band Camp for jazz and band will be lead by Dr. Del Lyren, professor of high brass at Bemidji State, along with special guests:

• Sam Hazo, director of the MusiCamp Wind Ensemble for grades 9-12. Hazo has written original symphonic compositions for actors Brooke Shields, James Earl Jones, David Conrad and Richard Kiley and symphonic arrangements for three-time Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Lucinda Williams. His works have been performed and recorded worldwide and aired by National Public Radio;

• Jacquie Dawson, director of bands at Vincent Massey Collegiate in Winnipeg, Manitoba, who will direct the MusiCamp Concert Band for grades 7-9; and

• Ronald Romm, founding member and trumpet in the Canadian Brass, who will teach trumpet lessons and present a recital and clinics; Romm, a pre-eminent trumpeter and clinician was a child prodigy who began a career as a soloist at the age of 10. Now an instructor at the University of Southern California, he has performed live and recorded CDs with leading artists including Wynton Marsalis, Jon Faddis, Doc Severinsen and the brass performers from the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Piano Camp
Dr. Stephen Carlson, assistant professor of music and piano at Bemidji State, is directing the piano camp. Participants will receive several private lessons throughout the week, as well as play piano duets and attend sessions on music theory, style, and piano technique. The camp will culminate with the Piano Camp Recital on July 19.

Choral and Vocal Camp
The choral and vocal camp is directed by Dr. Brad Logan, chair of the Department of Music Bemidji State and director of choral activities, along with guest conductor Andy Miller, who is choral director at Long Prairie High School. The Final Choir Concert with performers in formal attire will be at 1:30 p.m., July 26, in the Thompson Recital Hall of the Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex.

The camp instructional fee per registrant for musical and recreational activities is $240 for one week and $430 for two weeks, which includes a non-refundable $100 deposit to be made at the time of registration. The room and board fee for students residing on campus is an additional $175 per week.
