BEMIDJI, Minn. – Bemidji State University’s Outdoor Program Center (OPC) will lead a night-time canoe and kayak trip across Lake Bemidji on Wednesday, April 23, and a weekend rock climbing trip to Ennis Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness from April 25-27.
• Moonlight Canoe Paddle
After meeting at the BSU waterfront at 7 p.m., the group will paddle six miles to the state park at the north end of the lake, where cups of hot chocolate and a shuttle van will be waiting.
The trip is free and open to the public. Those interested in paddling should call the OPC to reserve a spot. Paddlers can travel in a BSU canoe or kayak, or bring their own boat.
• Boundary Waters Rock Climbing
A group of six participants and three instructors will backpack into Ennis Lake, crossing terrain carved by glaciers and catching scenic views. They will camp at Ennis Lake and spend the weekend climbing a cliff that overlooks the lake.
Considered a great trip for beginners as well as more advanced climbers, the trip will include instruction on climbing basics, such as knot tying, belaying and rappelling.
Open to the public, the trip costs $60 for students and $85 for all others. A $25 deposit is required at registration; the cost includes meals and transportation. A van will leave BSU at about 3 p.m. on Friday, April 25, and return at about 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 27. Ennis Lake is about 20 miles east of Ely, Minn.
Instructors will arrange a group meeting before the trip to discuss trip details.
