BEMIDJI, Minn. – Dr. Fulton Gallagher, professor emeritus of music at Bemidji State, will present “Opera – For Real!” as part of a spring Tuesday morning lecture series sponsored by the Academy of Lifelong Learning and coordinated by the BSU Center for Research and Innovation (CRI).
The lecture will be held Tuesday, April 15, at 10 a.m. at the CRI, an off-campus facility located at 3801 Bemidji Avenue North. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Assisted by two university students, Gallagher will demonstrate traits of Italian and German styles of opera. Italian opera tends to center on everyday situations while German opera focuses on supernatural events and characters and the pervading theme of the super race.
Live music will help the audience understand the dynamic appeal of live opera without the use of amplification. Gallagher said he hopes to ignite the thrill listeners feel when they hear opera music that is exciting and refreshing.
Gallagher’s lecture will conclude the Academy of Lifelong Learning lecture series for this spring.
The Academy of Lifelong Learning offers humanities-based programs that are made possible in part with private donations and BSU support.
