RESN hosts session on employee discipline and termination

BEMIDJI, Minn. — The Regional Employer Support Network will feature a presentation about policy, processes and forms used in disciplinary actions and employee terminations from 9-11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, at the Bemidji State University Center for Research and Innovation, located at 3801 Bemidji Avenue North.

The session is free and open to all who want to learn more about the topic. For additional information, check online at http://www.cri-bsu.org or by calling the CRI at (218) 755-4900 or (888) 738-3224.

Presenting will be Jennifer Drotts, human resources manager, Bigfork Valley Hospital in Big Fork, Minn., and LeeAnn Shogren, human resources coordinator, Pinnacle Publishing, Bemidji, Minn.

They will each be presenting the forms and processes used by their respective companies in disciplining and terminating employees. Handouts of the materials will be provided to participants and a group discussion will follow their presentations.

Drotts had served as human resources director with Johanneson’s Inc. of Bemidji for a number of years prior to accepting her current position with Bigfork Valley Hospital about a year ago. Shogren possesses several years of experience in human resources.

“Disciplining employees is never fun, but often it leads to clarification of job duties,” said Drotts. “We spend a lot of time listening to the employee and hearing their side of the story, along with how their behavior or action impacts others. Bigfork Valley then follows up with a meeting to review the employee’s improvements.”

The Regional Employer Support Network was formed after employers in the region expressed the need for a network of professionals involved in human resources development and management. It usually meets the first Thursday of each month with regular sessions lasting two hours and quarterly sessions lasting longer. The sessions are open to anyone interested in learning more about the featured topic.

CRI staff members help facilitate RESN activities, and organizations collaborating to support the group include North Country Health Services, North Country Business Products, Potlatch, Bi-CAP, Johanneson, Inc., Pinnacle Publishing and Anderson Fabrics.
