Dr. Marci Maple, professor of nursing, was inducted into the Global Academy of Holistic Nursing in June. The academy focuses on advancing the specialty of holistic nursing around the world.
Dr. Mark Lawrence, professor of geography, published two articles in May 2020. “The Chinese and the Chief’s Tree: Framing Narratives of Socionature and Development in Kibwezi, Kenya” was published in Geographica Helvetica, the Swiss journal of geography, and “Seeing Them All? Thinking About Institutions, Indigenization, and the Political Ecologies of Slums” was published in the international textbook “Social Work of the South, Vol. 8: Indigenous and Local Knowledge in Social Work.”
Dr. Dean Frost, professor of business administration, published the book “Achieving Success as a 21st Century Manager,” which discusses how to advance careers through professional development.
Maureen Gibbon, professor of English, published a novel titled “The Lost Notebook of Édouard Manet,” which focuses on the last three years in the life of artist Édouard Manet. In December, the New York Times included the book in its list of the best new historical novels.
Dr. Eric Forsyth, professor of human performance, sport and health, published the last of a four-part series, “Contemporary Issues Within High School Sports: Participation and Sportsmanship Issues.” The series is the result of a national research study that evaluated issues in interscholastic sports and addressed common problems encountered by athletic administrators.
Dr. Season Ellison, associate professor of history, was the lead author of the chapter “Reading the Local in the New Now: Mapping Hidden Opportunities for Civic Engagement in the First Virtual City as Text™ Faculty Institute” which was released in October 2021 by the National Collegiate Honors Council.
Dr. Shannan Norman, associate professor of human performance, sport and health, received the 2021 Lou Keller Award from the Minnesota Society of Health and Physical Education, an association that offers resources for educators of health, physical education, recreation or dance. Norman was nominated by a former student Macayla Braun ‘20 for her commitment to professional development.
Dr. Ana López-Aguilera, assistant professor of Spanish, published the textbook “Culturas hispanas a través de la pantalla” which analyzes Latina/o/x representation in pop culture. The book received an Innovation Grant from the Minnesota State system of colleges and universities and is available as an online education resource.
Dr. Jennifer Olson, assistant professor of music, received a $3,000 Minnesota State Arts Grant in November 2020 to record an album of Latin American songs with Dr. Ana Maria Otamendi, a Venezuelan pianist, coach and conductor.
Dr. Eric Olson, assistant professor of music, received a Region 2 Arts Council grant that sponsored a May 2021 recital and week-long master class with Dr. John Gilbert, professor of violin at the Texas Tech University School of Music in Lubbock, Texas. The class was offered to BSU violin students and members of the Bemidji community. Under the artistic direction of Dr. Dwight Jilek, assistant professor of music and director of choral activities at Bemidji State, Olson also performed during a digital concert with choral group Magnum Chorum. Jilek was appointed as artistic director of the choir in 2018.
Dr. Timothy Goodwin, associate professor of professional education, published second editions of “Within These Woods,” a collection of nature essays, and his textbook “Consider, Construct, Confirm: A New Framework for Teaching and Learning.” “Within These Woods,” first published in 2015, was also reviewed by the Star Tribune’s Pam Miller in July.
Dr. Hilary Lowery, assistant professor of music performed clarinet with the Hartland Symphony Orchestra in Little Falls during its December 2-4 concert series titled “A Concerto for the Holiday.” The orchestra is under the conduction of Ryan Webber, adjunct instructor of music. Additionally, Webber participated in the 2021 Sinfonietta Memphis International Conducting Academy and worked closely with founder Dr. Kevin Sütterlin, director of orchestras at Concordia College in Moorhead, and Dr. Mattias Elmer, director of orchestras at Virginia Tech School of Performing Arts in Blacksburg, Virginia. As a result, he was selected from a pool of more than 60 international applicants to be a guest conductor of the Sinfonietta Memphis ensemble in Memphis, Tennessee. He was joined by bassoonist Dr. Miriam Webber, assistant professor of music, who performed with the orchestra.
Mitch Blessing, associate professor of technology, art and design, exhibited “Worth Repeating” in Bemidji State’s Talley Gallery in September. The show featured prints, sculptures and uniquely installed art meant to encourage viewers to slow down and embrace each moment.
