President Hensrud presented changes to the university’s administrative organizational structure, most of which will become effective on Jan. 1.
A new Executive Director of Enrollment Management position is being created from the dean of student support services currently held on an interim basis by Michelle Frenzel. Hensrud said the current structure of two deans — one of student success and one of student support services — is confusing, and a new structure will clarify the focus of this position on enrollment management. This position will report directly to President Hensrud, but will be expected to work closely with units reporting to Provost Anderson on recruitment and retention.
The reporting line for Career Services will be changed, with that office reporting to the Executive Director of Enrollment Management to align it with advising and other student services. In addition, the executive director will oversee the Advising Success Center, the Office of the Registrar, TRIO/Student Support Services/Upward Bound, Disability Services, Recruitment and Admissions and the Office of Financial Aid.
Hensrud also announced a number of changes to the reporting lines for the Provost’s Office. Hensrud said the changes were driven by her concern over the number of direct reports currently managed by the provost. The Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs is being elevated to an associate vice president and will have additional reporting lines. The provost also will oversee deans for each of BSU’s three colleges, a Dean of Students position which is currently vacant, the Center for Extended Learning, the McNair Program, the Graduate School and Optivation, which has a dual report to the interim dean of Northwest Technical College.
The Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, which will be filled by Randy Westhoff on an interim basis for one year, will oversee Library and Library Services, Institutional Research and Effectiveness, the Center for Professional Development, the Honors Program and Liberal Education, International Studies, the International Program Center, women’s studies/gender studies, and the Leadership Program.
BSU’s vacant position of Vice President for Innovation and Extended Learning, previously held by Bob Griggs, will not be filled. The Director of Extended Learning position, held by Lynn Johnson, will likely be elevated to an Executive Director of Extended Learning, reporting directly to the provost, and overseeing distance learning and summer programs.
A vacant Dean of Students position will report to the provost and oversee the American Indian Resource Center, Campus Recreation, the Hobson Memorial Union, Housing and Residence Life, the Student Center for Health and Counseling, the Office of Student Conduct, Dining Services and the Veterans Resource Center.
In other changes, the Chief Information Officer will now report to the Vice President for Finance and Administration to align it with other organizational infrastructure functions; at Northwest Technical College, Distance Minnesota reporting lines are also being restructured.
President Hensrud will be launching three searches to fill the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, Vice President for Academic Affairs at Northwest Technical College, and Executive Director of Enrollment Management positions, all currently held by interim appointments. BSU Human Resources will manage the searches with assistance from a search firm, which has been contracted to help identify candidate pools.
Human Resources anticipates the Provost and Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs position could be posted before Dec. 9 and is tentatively planning for Skype interviews in mid-February and on-campus interviews in late March.
The Vice President for Academic Affairs at Northwest Technical College is on a similar schedule, approximately two weeks behind the provost position, but HR still intends to post the position before the holiday break.
HR intends to post the Executive Director of Enrollment Management position in early January.
Deb Peterson will continue for one more year as interim Assistant to the President for Affirmative Action and Accreditation, and Randy Westhoff will continue for one more year as interim Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs.
